Video: Dr. McFrederick on “Why we need bees”

We’re experimenting with recording and sharing videos of our talks. Still working out the tech involved, but here is the video of Dr. Quinn McFrederick’s January talk on the bees.

This was filmed by Kira Kratzer on her iPad – hand-held – so kudos to her! The videos are shared on Google Drive from where they can be embedded directly, so fingers crossed that that part works smoothly without needing to upload to youtube and so forth. Once we do work out the video workflow, we will probably create a youtube/vimeo channel for our cafe, and post video recordings there. Meanwhile, please bear with us, and excuse the vertical frame, people walking in/out of frame and other minor oddities of this recording.

Due to a glitch towards the end of the talk, Kira had to restart recording, so the entire talk is in two segments. Here is Part 1:

And Part 2:

An additional note: we’ve asked Dr. McFrederick to share his slides, and will add a link to those / embed them here when available.

  1. I have been a fan of Cafe since I went to my first one five years ago. I have attended them regularly and have been enthusiastically sharing with friends how great it is! As retired educators, we are thrilled to be a part of this “continuing education” and exposure to topics which are interesting and thought provoking. Through the last few years, we have grown to a group of ten of us, eagerly awaiting the next month’s meeting. Last year due to”spotty” communication and other reasons Cafe attendance was weak and our group seemed to be the core of attendance. This was unfortunate because the topics were great!
This year we were disappointed to learn that we abandoned Cafe Via to go to Peeves but because we enjoy Cafe so much and we like supporting downtown we decided to attend. After walking around at night & being approached by people a couple of times my husband started feeling uncomfortable wanted to leave but I was determined to attend. When we got there, again the place was packed, standing room only to the door. There was no way we were going to be able to eat plus it was difficult to focus on the speaker w/ so many distractions. Unfortunately, we ended up leaving. Sadly, it is doubtful that our group will attend in Cafe this year unless it’s at another venue. Nothing against Peeve’s but it just doesn’t seem to be the right fit for Cafe. I think it’s a bit embarrassing to invite speakers who are passionate about their topics present in a distracting atmosphere where some are there because they want to be there listening and then others who happened to drop in for a bite or a couple of beers.
We’ll all be waiting to attend future lectures when you decide to move to another venue. Thank you for continuing this great program.
