Get off your phone (unless it’s important): Device distraction in social context

Please join us Monday, March 6, 2017, at 7:00PM to listen to a talk from Dr. Henry Delcore, Professor of Anthropology, regarding the rise in use of mobile devices.

Our public discussion of mobile device use is littered with claims that mobile devices, especially smartphones, are an anti-social distraction. At the university, a parallel discussion revolves around smartphones as distractions from learning. Indeed, we have data to support the claim that devices in the classroom inhibit learning. But is this all we need to know about devices and distraction? In this talk, I argue that, before we can act effectively, we must know more about the social situation of the user and the social context of use.
