What can we do with the ugly produce? Toss it !? Sell it!? Redistribute it!? Food waste reduction practices in German food retail.

Please join us Monday, October 1, 2018 at 7 PM for our next Cafe Sci! Meike Rombach, a research associate from the Technical University of Munich, is talking about food waste.

Her work is exploring food retailers’ food waste reduction practices and their motivation to redistribute food for charitable purpose or to follow the trend of selling fresh produce with optical blemishes. What drives or hinders retailers to be committed to redistribution? Only image and reputation? Tax deduction or cost reduction? Altruistic motives? Is the legal background in Germany hindering or supporting redistribution to food banks and other charitable organization? What do retailers think about a new trend to sell produce with optical blemishes? Are there differences between conventional and organic retailers?
